Texas Mayor Faces Outrage Over 'Suck It Up' Remark Following Officer's Death, Fire Tragedy

Canton Mayor Lou Ann Berry is facing significant backlash for remarks made during a livestream interview concerning recent tragedies in the city, including the death of a deputy and a house fire that claimed the lives of a mother and her four children.

During the broadcast on KYTX, Berry addressed the death of Van Zandt County deputy Adam Sherifi, who was killed on October 20 while serving a warrant, and the separate incident where a mother and her children died in a house fire.

Berry initially expressed sadness, stating she was teary-eyed upon hearing the news and describing the events as a "tragedy for everybody." She also acknowledged the family of the suspect involved in the deputy's shooting, saying, "His family is going to be wondering what happened to him."

However, the mayor then smiled and added, "We will just have to suck it up and go on." This comment quickly ignited fury among viewers who found it insensitive and disrespectful.

Social media users reacted strongly, with many calling for Berry's resignation. "Suck it up and go on?????? who says that after indicating children died in a fire and two officers were hurt and one died? Who says that!?" one commenter wrote. Others questioned her demeanor, with one user stating, "What a bizarre woman. She laughs at the criminal's actions, despite how it ended. She doesn't know that the sheriff deputy had children and a wife."

Further controversy arose when, after the interview, Berry was overheard on camera asking someone if they wanted some "gossip." This moment, captured in a clip that circulated online, drew additional criticism for perceived unprofessionalism and disrespect toward the victims and their families.

Berry later issued an apology, stating, "My comment had nothing to do with the unfortunate events of last evening. My biggest regret on this pop off comment is that it has become a distraction from the seriousness of the loss of these lives and the major injury to our city policeman." She did not directly address the "suck it up" remark.

The deputy, Adam Sherifi, was killed during a shootout with a suspect wanted on outstanding felony warrants for aggravated assault. Officers had arrived at the location around 10:00 p.m. when the suspect began firing from inside the home. Sherifi was fatally wounded during the exchange, and the suspect was found dead inside the house. A wounded officer was transported to a hospital.

The house fire occurred on the same day, resulting in the deaths of a 3-year-old girl and two boys, aged five and eight. Their mother was critically injured and later died at Parkland Hospital in Dallas.
