Texas Man Returns $128,514 Found on ATM
A Lewisville resident discovered a large sum of cash and checks and ensured it was returned to the rightful owner.
A Lewisville, Texas, man has been lauded for his honesty after discovering $128,514 in cash and 19 checks left unattended on top of a Bank of America ATM. The man, who has chosen to remain anonymous, found the money on the morning of August 3.
While on his way to use the ATM, the 37-year-old noticed two bags on the machine. Upon inspection, he found a substantial amount of cash in the larger bag and checks in the smaller one. He initially suspected the money might belong to a nearby Chick-fil-A and drove to the restaurant to inquire. A manager confirmed the funds were not associated with the business, prompting the man to contact 911.
Lewisville Police responded to the scene and verified the amount of cash, which matched a bank receipt found within the larger bag. Detective Gina Miller, of the Lewisville Police Department, noted that while she has handled cases of lost property, this instance was unprecedented in her experience.
Investigators determined that the money belonged to Bank of America and was being transported by its cash vendor, Brink's. It is believed that a Brink's technician inadvertently left the bag on the ATM after servicing it. Bank of America has since recovered the funds, and there is no indication of criminal activity associated with the incident.
Brink's has declined to comment on the specifics of the situation. While the man declined any reward and sought no publicity, Bank of America has conveyed its gratitude. Lewisville Police intend to formally recognize the man for his integrity.
Lewisville Chief Brook Rollins commended the individual's actions, stating that the event serves as a reminder of people's willingness to act ethically. He highlighted the man's immediate decision to secure and report the found money, underscoring the positive relationship between law enforcement and the community. The incident also serves as a reminder that keeping found money of this magnitude could lead to felony theft charges.
