Texas Legend Colt McCoy Believes Current Longhorns Roster is Most Talented Ever
Former quarterback Colt McCoy returned to Dallas for the Red River Rivalry and expressed high hopes for the undefeated Texas Longhorns' national title aspirations.
Colt McCoy, a storied figure in Texas Longhorns football, returned to Dallas ahead of the annual Red River Rivalry game, asserting that the current Texas roster is arguably the most talented in the program's history.
McCoy, who played for Texas from 2006 to 2009, holds a 3-1 record in his rivalry appearances against the Oklahoma Sooners. He reflected on the significance of the matchup, describing it as a "special game" steeped in tradition.
"Just the history of this game, right in the middle between both schools, played in Dallas, played in the Cotton Bowl, that place, I mean, you just feel the sanctity of that place when you walk down the tunnel, the shared tunnel," McCoy said in an interview. "The fans are split down the middle, it's always played in October, it's kind of the kickoff into your conference. It's just a really, really special game, at least the ones that I was a part of."
He also commented on the unpredictable nature of rivalries, noting that even the best teams can struggle if they are not prepared on game day.
"And the beauty of rivalries is that you may be the best team in the country, but if you don't strap it up and play that day or if you're off that day, like you got problems. So, I love it. Just being back here is pretty surreal. It's a really, really fun weekend."
McCoy was in Dallas interacting with fans on behalf of Fanatics, a company that sells official Red River Rivalry merchandise. He noted the enthusiasm of the Texas fans.
"I had a great time, man. Texas fans are the best, dude. They show up everywhere. It's a whole lot of fun to engage with them. And then especially this weekend, this was the one game on your calendar every year that you circled, and you thought about, and you got nervous about all the things. This is a fun one," McCoy said.
Looking ahead, McCoy expressed confidence in the current No. 1 ranked Texas Longhorns, who enter the Red River Rivalry undefeated at 4-0. He believes this team possesses the talent and coaching to compete for a national championship.
"Listen, we're 4-0 and number one in the country, and they hadn't really clicked yet, right? The sky's the limit for this team. They're super talented. They're well coached. They kind of have all the makings from both sides of the ball to be really special. And I certainly think that they have a lot of confidence internally, and they just got to go do it. And I really think they will," McCoy stated.
He further elaborated on the team's potential, referencing a past decade-long drought for the program.
"We had a 10-year dry spell that was hard. I think right now what I'll give you is I do think that this is arguably the most talented roster that Texas has had. Just when you look across the board, you look at the coaching staff, you look at the players, you look at just the straight talent, like man-to-man, they're never going to go into a game and be outmatched. And that really got to give everyone on that team a lot of confidence."
McCoy also acknowledged former Oklahoma players he shared locker rooms with in the NFL, including Trent Williams, Adrian Peterson, Tress Way, and Kyler Murray, calling them "really good dudes."
