Texas Gives Arch Manning Backup Reps Amid Struggles

Texas is increasing first-team practice repetitions for backup quarterback KJ Lacey Jr. this week, according to ESPN, as starter Arch Manning faces mounting pressure following two consecutive losses. The move signals that the team is preparing for a potential change at the quarterback position.

Manning is expected to remain the starter for the upcoming game against No. 7 Ole Miss, but head coach Steve Sarkisian acknowledged the need for improvement. "I think there’s no doubt about it: Arch can play better for us," Sarkisian told reporters on Monday. "He’s our starter, but I need to see a better version of Arch Manning."

Manning has been criticized for turnovers on the Longhorns' final drives in their last two defeats. He has also reportedly struggled with command of the offense, holding the ball too long and missing open receivers. The recent loss to Florida, a team that had allowed 83 points in its previous two games and was playing with its backup quarterback on the road, was particularly concerning.

Lacey's strengths are said to include quick decision-making and accuracy, qualities that could help alleviate the offensive struggles Texas has faced. While a benching is not guaranteed, the Longhorns are reportedly preparing for the possibility.

Through six games this season, Manning has thrown for 11 touchdowns and five interceptions. He has surpassed 300 passing yards in a game only once, in the season opener against Texas State. These struggles could potentially impact his standing in future NFL Draft evaluations.

Sarkisian, who had previously defended Manning, stated after the Florida loss that "everything is going to be evaluated."

Texas Longhorns quarterback Karle “KJ” Lacey Jr. (9) throws a pass during warmups before the Allstate Red River Rivalry game against the Oklahoma Sooners at Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas, Saturday, Oct. 10, 2026.
