Texas Football Player Apologizes for 'Vulgar' Celebration in Front of Trump

Texas Longhorns player Colin Simmons has issued a public apology for a "vulgar" on-field celebration that occurred in front of President Donald Trump during a game against Tennessee. Simmons, a junior pass rusher, performed the gesture after recording one of his five sacks in the 20-17 victory.

The incident, which drew an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for "simulating using the restroom," was immediately criticized by ABC broadcasters. Following the game, Simmons acknowledged his actions were a mistake made in the heat of the moment, stating, "I was definitely in that mode, feeling myself. But, you know, it happens. Charge it to the game."

He later took to social media to ask for forgiveness, writing, "All Glory To God. Thank you for listening to my prayers and forgive me for my actions."

President Trump was in attendance at Neyland Stadium, performing a flyover in Air Force One and appearing on the stadium's jumbotron, where he was met with cheers. He was seated with Tennessee Senator Marsha Blackburn.

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian addressed the celebration post-game, expressing his displeasure while indicating he would not impose severe punishment. "Can't happen. That's a bad football play," Sarkisian said. "We had harped and talked about this game about not getting emotional with the crowd and that was an emotional play."

Sarkisian noted that the team had discussed controlling emotions, especially during the second half. "We took him out, we addressed it, and put him back in," he continued. "I mean, at that point, I'm not going to give the guy the death penalty over an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, we got to fix it though."

Simmons' teammate, linebacker Justin Cryer, also commented on the situation, stating he attempted to intervene before the penalty was called. "I tried to run over there and grab him," Cryer said. "I seen where it was going, and I tried to go grab him before we got a penalty, but it was too late."

Cryer advised Simmons to "just keep our head" and not let penalties dictate the game's outcome. Despite the penalty, Simmons' five sacks were a significant contribution to the Longhorns' win.
