Texas Father Fatally Shot During Softball Game Argument; Family Claims Racial Motive

A 36-year-old Texas father was fatally shot in front of his family after an argument erupted during a softball game, according to reports. Three other individuals, including the victim's wife and mother-in-law, sustained injuries and were transported to a hospital.

Jarmon Mattix, a father of three and a CDL truck driver, was pronounced dead at the scene in the parking lot of the Fall Creek Sports Complex in Humble, a suburb northeast of Houston. The incident occurred Sunday evening, shortly before 9:24 p.m., when Harris County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a call reporting a disturbance and gunfire.

Mattix's sister, Destiny Williams, told local media that the altercation involved racial slurs directed at her brother moments before he was shot. "My brother was targeted, and it’s just a devastating situation that we’re in right now," Williams stated, expressing her belief that the shooting was racially motivated. She added, "It's the fact that... sometimes, being black, it can happen like that... and that’s what happened today."

Investigators confirmed that weapons were recovered from the scene and that two suspects have been identified, though they have not been publicly named, and no charges have been announced. Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzales stated that while he had not yet been briefed on the racial slur claims, they would be considered as part of the ongoing investigation. "Our condolences go out to the family. We know this is incredibly tragic and we're pulling for the others to make a full recovery," Sheriff Gonzales said.

According to preliminary reports from the sheriff's office, a dispute that began during the softball game escalated into a physical altercation in the parking lot, culminating in the shooting. One witness reported that both Mattix and another man drew guns during the confrontation. The complex is typically described by residents as a family-friendly environment, making the violence particularly shocking.

Coaches who knew Mattix described him as a dedicated father actively involved in his children's lives and sports activities. Mattix's sister has urged authorities to conduct a thorough investigation to uncover the full details of the incident, emphasizing that all individuals deserve justice regardless of race.

Anyone with information regarding the shooting is encouraged to contact the Harris County Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit at 713-274-9100 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS (8477).
