Texas Dem Candidate Bobby Pulido's Past Online Remarks Spark Controversy

WASHINGTON — Grammy-winning singer and Democratic congressional candidate Bobby Pulido has come under scrutiny for a series of past social media posts that have resurfaced, drawing attention to his vulgar and sexually suggestive remarks made online.

Pulido, 55, who is challenging Republican incumbent Rep. Monica De La Cruz in a competitive Texas House race, has a history of controversial online statements. Recent discoveries include exchanges where Pulido joked about rape and made crude comments to women.

In a 2019 post on X, a user wrote in Spanish, "I remember when @bobbypulido425 wanted me and even raped me in his DRESSING ROOOOM—holy sh—, that dude is a legend." Pulido responded, "Shhh… it was our secret." Both individuals appeared to be joking.

Pulido addressed the coverage in a video statement, claiming the remarks were "old jokes between me and my personal friends" and that "Mexican humor is sarcastic, brutal, and full of slang that doesn’t survive Google Translate." He also criticized the "woke right" for focusing on his past posts.

In another instance from January 2020, Pulido commented on a woman's selfie on X, "You’d better shave your p—y." He also responded to a user's deleted post by remarking, "Help us find that goth big-ass chick. This dude is suffering a ton."

Previously reported controversies include Pulido telling an Asian person to "open your Asian eyes" and suggesting that molesting children is "not necessarily rape." In 2020, he also replied to a fan claiming to be ill with an image of women suggestively consuming chicken soup. In 2018, Pulido posted an image of his coffee shaped like a butt and shared an image of a cartoon woman in a sexual pose.

Pulido also made a remark in 2016 about being on his "black couch" and asking "Casting anybody??", an apparent reference to the Hollywood casting couch trope. In a since-deleted post from 2020, Pulido wrote about a female bodybuilder who supposedly drank semen smoothies, adding, "Ladies, finally we’re good for something."

Pulido, who has also been criticized for his past association with ex-bandmate Frankie Caballero, convicted of sexual assault, previously toured with Caballero after his prison sentence. Pulido's campaign has stated that he did not bail Caballero out or pick him up from jail.

The race between Pulido and De La Cruz is currently rated a toss-up by the Cook Political Report.
