Texas Congressional Race Heats Up Over Campaign Spending and Debate Remarks

Katy Padilla Stout, the Democratic nominee for Texas' 23rd Congressional District, has drawn renewed attention following the reporting of her campaign's expenditures totaling over $4,300 on items including cookies, Mexican restaurant purchases, and alcoholic beverages. These transactions, filed with the Federal Election Commission (FEC), occurred in March and April.

According to federal records, the reported purchases included $675 for cookies for a campaign event, $1,289.22 at Total Wine, and $2,373.92 at Las Guitarras Cocina Mexicana. Stout's campaign stated that these disbursements "were for campaign and fundraising events which were attended by our supporters." She further commented, "Sugar cookies, particularly Texas-shaped ones, hold a special place in Texan culture. We bought ours at a local bakery because we believe in supporting small businesses."

The expenditures have become a point of attack for her Republican opponent, Brandon Herrera, whose campaign website highlights the cookie purchase and criticizes Stout for allegedly using donor funds for such items. Under a section titled "Cookie gate," Herrera's site details the $675 expenditure for "COOKIES FOR EVENT."

The campaign spending emerged amidst a heated debate between the two candidates, where Stout issued an apology for a remark concerning Herrera's online videos. During the televised debate, Stout accused Herrera of "making fun of Nazis" and promoting an ideology through his content. Herrera responded, "And here I thought making fun of Nazis was a good thing."

Stout later clarified her position, stating, "I apologize, I did misspeak." She elaborated that her objection was not to making fun of Nazis but to content that "trivializes veteran suicide, rape, child murder, women’s bodies, and the Holocaust, the type of content he churns out." She accused Herrera of goose-stepping on YouTube for clickbait and money, promoting such ideology, and shaming women. Stout also alleged that Herrera promotes Nazi imagery, citing specific videos where he is seen goose-stepping and firing Nazi-made weaponry, and noted that the Republican Jewish Coalition had called him "a goose-stepping extremist who pals around with online Nazis."

Herrera, a firearms manufacturer and online personality, is running on a platform of border law enforcement, tax reductions, and Second Amendment protections. Stout, a former teacher and child welfare attorney, has focused her campaign on affordability and combating corruption.

The race is to fill the seat vacated by former Republican Rep. Tony Gonzales. Texas' 23rd Congressional District encompasses a significant portion of the U.S.-Mexico border. Early voting is scheduled to begin October 19, with Election Day on November 3.
