Texas Children's Hospital Opens Nation's First Detransition Clinic Following Legal Settlement

Texas Children's Hospital has officially opened the nation's first detransition clinic, a development stemming from a significant legal settlement with the state. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced the clinic's opening, noting it was a condition of a $10 million settlement finalized in August.

The clinic will offer detransition-related medical care to patients up to age 21, and obstetric and gynecologic care for those over 21 seeking to reverse gender transition treatments. Paxton stated that the clinic will provide support to "victims of the radical left’s gender ideology."

The settlement resolved government claims that the hospital had improperly billed Texas Medicaid for gender-transition treatments. As part of the agreement, Texas Children's Hospital is required to fully fund the detransition clinic's services for its first five years and publicize its existence on its website.

A spokesperson for Texas Children's Hospital affirmed the hospital's commitment to providing the highest standard of care, which includes the services offered by the new clinic. The hospital confirmed that care may be delivered across multiple locations depending on patient needs and will encompass services such as Endocrinology, Surgery, Primary Care, Fertility Counseling, Psychiatry, Psychology, Social Work/Case Management, and Speech Pathology. The clinic is operational, and the hospital is actively triaging prospective patients through its established intake process. However, as of Wednesday, the spokesperson noted that no clinical appointments had yet taken place.

The settlement came as Attorney General Paxton is campaigning for the Republican nomination in the Texas Senate race. The Trump administration has also taken steps to restrict gender-affirming care, including a previous announcement to cease Medicaid funding for gender transition surgeries for minors.
