Two brothers in San Antonio, Texas, were fatally shot by their neighbor on Tuesday, an incident authorities are describing as seemingly random and unprovoked. Dravyn Quiroz, 20, and his 11-year-old brother Maliki Perales died within 12 hours of each other after Daniel Antonio Perez, 40, allegedly began firing at them.
The shooting occurred as Quiroz was backing a car into the family driveway, and Perales was outside, according to reports. The brothers' father, Andrew Perales, stated he heard gunshots and then saw his son on the ground. He reported that the alleged gunman was across the street reloading and firing again. Maliki Perales was transported to a nearby store and then to a hospital, where he died shortly before 8:50 p.m. Quiroz passed away approximately 12 hours later.
Perez was arrested about 10 minutes after the shooting as he attempted to flee the scene. He has been charged with capital murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar described Perez as a "ticking time bomb" who had exhibited mental health episodes in the past, including "seeing things that were not there," according to investigators. However, these episodes were reportedly never reported to authorities.
Investigators recovered the firearm used in the shooting from a drainage culvert. The sheriff's office indicated that Perez also fired at two other siblings who were near the front door of the residence but missed them.
Andrew Perales described his sons as "fighters" with "good morals" and "good values." Quiroz had recently undergone surgeries for pancreatitis and diabetic ketoacidosis.
Perez is scheduled to appear in court in November. A vigil was held on Saturday in memory of the two brothers.
