The University of Texas has attributed head coach Steve Sarkisian's abrupt departure from a sideline reporter to technical difficulties experienced by ESPN, rather than a dismissive attitude towards the interviewer. The incident occurred immediately following Texas's dramatic 24-23 comeback victory over Ohio State.
Sarkisian faced widespread criticism on social media after he appeared to cut short an on-field interview with ESPN's Holly Rowe. As Rowe attempted to ask questions about the game, Sarkisian shouted, "Texas fight. That's called Texas fight. Hook 'Em!" while making a Longhorns gesture before walking away to join his team's celebration. The reporter was left visibly frustrated, and online commenters labeled Sarkisian's actions as "classless."
Adding to the unusual coverage, an awkward situation also occurred at halftime. Another ESPN sideline reporter, Rutledge, was positioned to interview Sarkisian as his team trailed 20-3, but the camera cut away as the coach headed to the locker room. Rutledge explained on air that Sarkisian had waited for a significant amount of time and declined the interview, later apologizing to the broadcast team for the technical issues that caused the delay. She clarified that Sarkisian had been patient and apologized to the ESPN crew, stating that the network owed him an apology.
Fans speculated that the halftime situation contributed to Sarkisian's post-game interaction with Rowe, suggesting lingering frustration over the delayed interview. While Rowe was being snubbed by Sarkisian, Rutledge successfully interviewed Texas quarterback Arch Manning, who cited the team's determination to avenge a previous loss to the same opponent as motivation for their win.
