Texas Barber Returns $128,000 Found on ATM
A routine trip to the bank turned extraordinary for a North Texas man who discovered a substantial amount of cash and checks left unattended on an ATM.
A barber in Lewisville, Texas, found approximately $128,510 in cash and 19 checks left on top of a Bank of America ATM, and subsequently returned the entire sum to authorities. The man, who chose to remain unidentified, was with a 42-year-old woman when the discovery was made last month.
Lewisville police detective Gina Miller described the incident as unprecedented in her experience. After finding the money, the barber attempted to return it to a nearby Chick-fil-A, believing it to be associated with the restaurant due to a label on one of the bags, but the manager confirmed it was not theirs.
The barber then contacted 911. A responding officer confirmed the amount and secured the money. Police later determined the cash belonged to Bank of America and was being handled by its cash management vendor, Brinks. A Brinks technician had reportedly serviced the ATM and accidentally left the bags on the machine.
"The bag was just sitting there," Miller told CBS. "There was no indication of a crime occurring. It looked like it was just left there by accident."
Bank of America confirmed the money was retrieved. Lewisville Police Chief Brook Rollins highlighted the importance of community cooperation, stating, "We are one half of the equation, the police; the other half is the community."
