San Antonio criminal defense attorney Neil Calfas, 56, was arrested Wednesday on charges of solicitation of prostitution and human trafficking. Investigators allege that Calfas demanded sexual acts from a woman, identified as “Julie,” in exchange for providing legal representation for her jailed brother.

According to a Texas Department of Public Safety arrest report, Calfas told Julie in March 2024 that she could pay him with money or her body. Although she initially refused, she later agreed to the alleged demand because she believed Calfas could help secure her brother's release, news outlets reported.

Calfas allegedly told the woman, "You or the money." Following the alleged encounter, Julie experienced immediate regret, according to the arrest report.

Investigators stated that Calfas never became the brother's lawyer, nor did he provide any defense or assist in securing his release on bond. In a subsequent conversation on March 21, Calfas reportedly advised the inmate to seek a public defender, citing his client's lack of funds.

Texas Department of Public Safety investigators raided Calfas' law office on Wednesday, seizing files, laptops, and other evidence before his arrest. The investigation included recorded jail phone calls, witness interviews, and court records.

Calfas' bail was set at a combined $110,000, and he was being held in the Guadalupe County jail. His office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
