Texas AD Clarifies AI Play-Calling Report Amid Fan Speculation
University of Texas Athletic Director Chris Del Conte addressed reports suggesting artificial intelligence was used to make a critical fourth-down decision.
The University of Texas has launched a new artificial intelligence lab, the Bevo Lab, prompting speculation that the football program might be using AI for on-field decision-making. This emerged after a report from the Austin-American Statesman suggested that the team used the new AI platform to aid in calling a fourth-down play during a recent game against Florida.
According to the report, in the fourth quarter of the game against Florida, with the score at 20-17 and facing a fourth-and-2 situation, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff reportedly turned to the Bevo Lab's artificial intelligence data analytics platform. The play, which resulted in a three-yard loss for quarterback Arch Manning, led to widespread fan discussion on social media, with many questioning the use of AI in critical game moments.
However, Texas Athletic Director Chris Del Conte clarified the situation, stating that the Bevo Lab was not directly used to call the play. Del Conte explained that the published report used the fourth-down decision as an example of what the AI platform could suggest, not what it actually did dictate.
Texas Athletics and the McCombs School of Business announced the creation of the 25,000-square-foot Bevo Lab, intended to integrate AI into various aspects of athletic department operations, including decision-making related to revenue-sharing and roster construction. The initiative aims to leverage advanced technology to enhance the university's athletic programs.
Despite the clarification, the incident highlights the intense scrutiny and fan reaction surrounding the Longhorns' recent performance. The team has faced consecutive losses to unranked opponents, adding to the pressure on coach Sarkisian and the offensive scheme. The upcoming game against Ole Miss is seen as a crucial test for the team's offense, particularly quarterback Arch Manning.
