Texas AD Apologizes for 'Embarrassing' Player Celebrations

University of Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte has publicly apologized for "embarrassing" on-field celebrations by players during the team's recent 20-17 victory over Tennessee. The incidents, which drew widespread criticism, have prompted an official statement from the university.

During the game, defensive end Colin Simmons, a highly-touted NFL prospect, was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct after miming the act of urinating on the field to celebrate a sack. Later in the game, player Raleek Brown celebrated a touchdown with a gesture involving his crotch before pretending to pass out.

"I'm not happy about that, I know none of us are, and it was embarrassing to our proud and widely respected football team, athletics program and university," Del Conte stated in his 'Forty Acres Insider' blog post on the school's athletics website. He acknowledged the "warranted concerns" shared by many and the negative attention the actions garnered.

Del Conte confirmed that head coach Steve Sarkisian deemed the celebrations unacceptable and had addressed the matter with both players. Sarkisian also indicated that disciplinary action would be taken, though specifics were not provided. Simmons was reportedly pulled from the game by Sarkisian following his celebration, and the player later issued an apology after video clips of the incident circulated online.

"I also want to add my apology to our Longhorn community and everyone who expects better from Texas," Del Conte wrote. "We should represent this university with class, dignity and respect at all times, and in those moments, we fell short. I do recognize that these are young men who made mistakes, and this is a meaningful learning experience. They have owned their mistakes, and those actions are not reflective of who they are."

Del Conte emphasized that similar behavior "cannot happen again." The incidents occurred as the University of Texas has risen to the No. 1 ranking in the country, though this success has been accompanied by some off-field controversies. Earlier in the month, after a win against Ohio State, Sarkisian's interaction with ESPN sideline reporter Holly Rowe led to the creation of AI-generated videos depicting him slapping her. Quarterback Arch Manning later apologized after referencing the video in a press conference, calling it "hilarious."
