Tesla Semi Electric Truck Set for European Debut with 342-Mile Range
Elon Musk's long-haul electric truck will launch in Europe in 2027, offering significant range and fast-charging capabilities.
Tesla is preparing to bring its Semi electric heavy goods vehicle (HGV) to European roads in 2027, offering a range of up to 342 miles on a single charge.
The electric truck, designed for long-haul transportation, was first unveiled nearly a decade ago. Tesla states the Semi is engineered to be more powerful and efficient than traditional trucks, while also reducing operating costs.
Range and Charging Capabilities
The European version of the Tesla Semi will feature the company's Megacharging technology, capable of charging speeds up to 1,200kW. According to Tesla, this system can add approximately 60% to the battery charge in just 30 minutes, enabling drivers to quickly resume their journeys. The truck is underpinned by a 1,000V architecture compatible with Megachargers. With charging speeds up to 800kW, the Semi can gain around 205 miles of range in a 30-minute charging session. Tesla estimates the truck's energy consumption at about 0.62 miles per kWh.
Despite the advanced charging technology, Tesla has not yet established a dedicated Megacharger network for the Semi in Europe, with further infrastructure details expected to be announced later.
Performance and Efficiency
The Semi is powered by three independent electric motors on its rear axles, delivering a combined output of 1,037 brake horsepower. The truck has a kerb weight of approximately 9,100 kg, excluding payload, with a gross combination weight reaching around 40 tonnes. Tesla highlights the Semi's strong performance at any speed and predictable power delivery, free from the noise, vibration, and complexity associated with diesel engines. The vehicle also includes an electric power take-off system capable of delivering up to 25kW for powering auxiliary equipment.
Lower Ownership Costs
Tesla emphasizes the potential for reduced ownership costs with the Semi. The company claims that the electric truck can lower energy expenses per mile compared to diesel alternatives in various operational scenarios, due to the lower cost of electricity. Additionally, reduced maintenance requirements, stemming from fewer moving parts and the absence of diesel after-treatment systems, are expected to increase vehicle uptime and simplify servicing. Similar to Tesla's passenger vehicles, the Semi will benefit from remote diagnostics and over-the-air software updates.
Availability and Pricing
Tesla has not yet confirmed pricing for the European market, as final specifications are subject to homologation and market configuration. While the Semi is available in North America in both Standard and Long Range variants, current indications suggest that the UK will initially receive only the Standard Range model. The Semi is currently on display at the IAA Transportation event in Hannover, Germany, until September 20. Customer deliveries in Europe are scheduled to commence next year, with additional details anticipated in the coming months.
