Tesla Driver Claims Sleep Before Crashing Into CHP Vehicle, Injuring Officers
California Highway Patrol emphasizes that Tesla's Full Self-Driving feature requires constant driver supervision.
A 22-year-old Sacramento man is alleged to have been asleep when his Tesla, reportedly using the Full Self-Driving system, crashed into a California Highway Patrol (CHP) vehicle on Interstate 80. The incident occurred on October 13, west of Air Base Parkway, as officers were investigating a fatal collision.
The Tesla entered the closed lanes of the freeway at speed and collided with the occupied patrol car, resulting in serious injuries to two officers. The CHP stated that the crash site was clearly marked with flares and cones, and emergency vehicles were present with flashing lights.
In a statement to KRON, the CHP clarified the limitations of Tesla's driver assistance technology. "Despite its name, Full Self-Driving is not fully autonomous. It is an SAE Level 2 driver assistance system that requires continuous driver supervision," the department said. The driver of the Tesla sustained minor injuries in the collision.
The incident raises questions about the driver's potential legal consequences. California law includes provisions for unsafe speed and reckless driving, though authorities have not yet specified any charges. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
