A Tesla vehicle crashed into the outdoor dining area of an Urbane Cafe in Simi Valley, California, on Monday afternoon, resulting in one fatality and five injuries, according to authorities.
The collision was reported around 2:30 p.m. near the intersection of Tierra Rejada and Madera roads in a busy shopping center, Simi Valley Police stated.
One person was pronounced dead at the scene. The Ventura County Fire Department reported that the five injured individuals sustained minor injuries. The identity of the deceased and further details about the victims have not yet been released.
Authorities have not commented on whether any driver-assistance technology was active at the time of the crash. This incident follows a separate Tesla Model 3 crash earlier this month in Katy, Texas, where a woman died. In that case, her family filed a lawsuit against Tesla and the driver, alleging that the vehicle's driver-assistance technology contributed to the crash. Tesla has contested these claims, asserting that the driver manually overrode the system by pressing the accelerator. Federal safety officials are investigating the Texas incident.
