Pro Football Hall of Famer and FOX NFL Sunday co-host Terry Bradshaw has shared how surviving two cancer battles has deepened his Christian faith and altered his perspective on mortality. Speaking on the "No Time But Now" podcast, Bradshaw reflected on his experiences with bladder cancer and Merkel cell carcinoma, and the existential questions that arose.
Bradshaw was first diagnosed with bladder cancer in November 2021. He underwent treatment and surgery, and the National Cancer Institute notes that Merkel cell carcinoma is a rare and fast-growing form of skin cancer that can spread early.
Shortly after completing treatment for bladder cancer, an MRI revealed a Merkel cell tumor in his neck. This diagnosis led to surgery to remove 27 lymph nodes, followed by six weeks of radiation treatment. During these health scares, Bradshaw found himself contemplating his faith and his place in the afterlife.
"My thoughts were about dying. Am I going to heaven? Am I a good enough man? Have I been a good enough Christian? Have I been kind to people? Am I going to heaven?" Bradshaw stated. He added that while death does not frighten him, his faith provides strength.
"I know I'm going to die. And when that time comes, how will I handle that with grace and strength and an understanding that God loves me? I'm going to go to heaven. I'm going to see my family again with it. Yes, that's going to be my, that's going to be my strength," he said.
The experience has also influenced his marriage to Tammy. Bradshaw expressed a desire for her to experience more happiness and to ensure she feels deeply loved, noting a renewed appreciation for their time together.
Bradshaw's reflections precede the release of his new memoir, "Looking for Terry: A Memoir," scheduled for Oct. 13. The book is expected to cover his battles with cancer, mental health, faith, and his decades-long career in football and television. Bradshaw, a four-time Super Bowl champion with the Pittsburgh Steelers, is slated to return as a co-host for FOX NFL Sunday for the 2026 season.
