Cornerback Terrion Arnold is reportedly nearing a new NFL contract with the Seattle Seahawks, despite facing felony charges related to an alleged kidnapping and robbery plot. Arnold, 23, was released by the Detroit Lions following the accusations, which include masterminding a scheme that could result in a life sentence.
Arnold reportedly impressed Seahawks head coach Mike McDonald during a visit and tryout on Monday. "It's enough right now that we had him in for a great visit, a great tryout," McDonald told reporters. "It's a situation where there's other things that are surrounding it as well. We're aware of that. We're working through the situation right now… But it was a great visit. I really enjoyed meeting him, and I think he enjoyed being here, so we'll see where it goes."
The NFL will determine whether to place Arnold on the commissioner's exempt list. He also worked out for the Houston Texans, New Orleans Saints, and New York Giants before his reported visit with Seattle.
Arnold was cut by Detroit after a judge set his bail at $1 million, allowing him to practice and play while awaiting trial. He cleared waivers after posting the bond and is under court orders to remain at his residence in Tallahassee, Florida, except for team-related activities. His passport has been surrendered. Prosecutors had sought an ankle monitor, but his attorneys argued it would impede his ability to play football, and the judge agreed.
Prosecutors allege that Arnold orchestrated the plan to lure three men to an apartment, where they were robbed and held at gunpoint. The victims, described as young males, sustained visible injuries, and their personal property was stolen. According to state attorneys, the alleged incident was in retaliation for Arnold reporting more than $250,000 worth of personal items missing from an Airbnb in Largo, Florida, in February. This included $100,000 in cash, an $80,000 necklace, and a team-issued cellphone.
However, prosecutors claim there is no evidence to corroborate Arnold's assertion that the alleged victims were responsible for his reported theft. Arnold is specifically accused of orchestrating the kidnapping and robbery just hours after filing his police report.
Arnold's agent, Denise White of EAG Sports Management, has stated that her client "maintains his innocence" and "categorically denies any involvement." The statement also asserted, "There is no credible evidence linking Mr. Arnold to these allegations. Instead, the government appears to be relying on testimony from multiple convicted felons who have admitted their own involvement and may have substantial incentives to shift blame in an effort to lessen their sentences. Mr. Arnold looks forward to his day in court and is confident that the judicial process will lead to his ultimate vindication."
The Lions selected Arnold in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft. He has played in 24 games with 22 starts over two seasons, recording one interception and 18 pass deflections.
