Rachael Field, a 56-year-old mother of three from Rhondda Cynon Taf, has been denied a crucial disability benefit despite being terminally ill with cancer and requiring extensive assistance for daily living. Field was diagnosed with tongue cancer six years ago and has since undergone removal of her tongue and voice box, along with a windpipe reconstruction. She now relies on a feeding tube for sustenance and is unable to eat or drink independently.

Field also faces significant mobility challenges and requires help with basic personal care, including washing, dressing, and using the toilet. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) stated that further evidence was needed to process her claim for Personal Independence Payment (Pip), a benefit designed to help with extra costs associated with disability. The DWP expressed regret for any distress the situation has caused the family.

Field's daughter, Kyra Hawkins-Field, launched a GoFundMe appeal to help her mother enjoy her remaining time, aiming to raise £1,000 for trips and experiences. Hawkins-Field described her father as a "superhero" for balancing full-time work with daily hospital visits to his wife. The family has indicated they are in discussions with the DWP regarding the benefit claim. A DWP spokesperson confirmed they have been trying to contact Field for additional information needed to finalize her claim and intend to continue these efforts. The family has acknowledged these discussions are ongoing.
