Tennessee Titans Secure First Win of Season, Face Offensive Challenges
The Titans' defense and special teams led the way in a 26-20 victory over the Colts, but the offense continues to struggle.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Titans have secured their first victory of the season, a 26-20 win against the Indianapolis Colts, providing much-needed relief for the team and first-year coach Robert Saleh. This win allows the team to address its issues with a clearer perspective, according to Saleh.
"We don’t just gloss over all the bad things and celebrate all the good things, we’ve got to look at everything the same," Saleh said Monday. "But it’s relief in the sense that the questions that get asked, you’re not just getting pounded about everything, every little mistake that was made in the game."
Defense and Special Teams Shine
The Titans' defense delivered its strongest performance of the season, registering six sacks and forcing three turnovers. All-Pro tackle Jeffery Simmons was instrumental, recording two sacks and forcing a fumble that set up a crucial field goal. Safety Amani Hooker returned from concussion protocol to lead the team with 13 tackles and an interception. The defense also played a key role in sealing the victory by forcing the Colts to turn the ball over on downs twice in the final two minutes.
Special teams also made a significant impact. Chimere Dike returned a punt 58 yards in the fourth quarter, setting up the game-tying touchdown. Julius Chestnut blocked a punt that Femi Oladejo returned for the Titans’ first lead of the game. Kicker Joey Slye contributed with four field goals, including a 56-yarder.
Offensive Struggles Persist
Despite the defensive and special teams success, the offense continued to face difficulties. The Titans set a season low for total yards for the second consecutive week and struggled to gain first downs. Quarterback Cam Ward had his least productive game of the season, passing for only 102 yards, his lowest total in a completed game since being drafted No. 1 overall in 2025. The team was outgained significantly in total yards, 399-186.
Tennessee is currently averaging just 14 points per game and ranks last in the NFL in total offense (235.3 yards per game) and passing offense (153.5 yards per game). Saleh emphasized the need for improvement on third downs and in generating explosive plays, while noting that the struggles are not solely on the quarterback.
Rookie wide receiver Carnell Tate recorded six catches for 70 yards and his first touchdown, leading the Titans with 344 receiving yards this season. However, cornerback Alontae Taylor, who signed a three-year, $58 million contract in March, was a healthy scratch against the Colts, a decision Saleh declined to elaborate on beyond stating it was his call.
The Titans have lost four consecutive home games and will host Cleveland on Sunday before traveling to Cincinnati. A subsequent bye week will offer the first-year coaching staff an opportunity to reassess and regroup for the remainder of the season.
