Tennessee Prison Chief Resigns Following Botched Execution

Tennessee Department of Correction Commissioner Frank Strada has resigned following the state's botched execution of murderer Christa Pike. Governor Bill Lee announced Strada's resignation on October 3, with his departure scheduled for later this month.

Pike, 50, survived two doses of pentobarbital during the execution attempt on Wednesday night. She remains alive but is reportedly unconscious, intubated, and on a ventilator, according to her legal representatives.

Strada stated that the department acted in accordance with established protocols but acknowledged that stepping aside is in the best interest of Tennesseans as an independent review of the incident proceeds. He expressed his commitment to cooperating fully with the review to determine the precise events that transpired.

Pike, who was convicted of the 1980 murder of her roommate, Colleen Slemmer, was Tennessee's first female inmate on death row in over two centuries. The execution attempt has drawn significant attention and criticism, with an independent review now underway.
