Tennessee Halts Executions After Botched Lethal Injection Attempt on Christa Pike

Tennessee has temporarily halted all executions for the remainder of the year following two failed attempts to administer a lethal injection to death row inmate Christa Pike. Governor Bill Lee announced the pause and ordered a third-party review into the incident.

"Lawful executions are among the state's most serious responsibilities," Lee stated in a release to CBS News. "I have ordered a review to determine exactly what occurred."

Prison officials on Wednesday attempted to execute Pike, 50, by administering two doses of the lethal drug pentobarbital. The attempts were unsuccessful, and Pike was transported to a hospital. Her current medical condition is unknown. Pike was sentenced to death in 1996 for the 1995 murder of Colleen Slemmer. At the time of the murder, Pike was 18 years old.

Pike's execution would have marked the first time a woman had been executed in Tennessee in over 200 years.

"I'm highly disappointed, along with Tennesseans, about what happened last night," Lee told reporters on Thursday.

The governor has not yet specified who will conduct the independent review of the state's execution procedures. The pause in executions will affect the scheduled December 3 execution of convicted murderer Gary Sutton.

Pike's legal team stated in court filings that she required "life-saving measures" after the botched execution.

The Tennessee Department of Correction defended its actions, asserting that it followed all established protocols. "The lethal injection chemical in the protocol has consistently been effective, and the protocol does not allow for additional procedures beyond what was carried out this evening," the department said in a statement.

This is the second execution attempt to be called off in Tennessee in 2026. In May, the execution of Tony Carruthers was halted when staff were unable to find a vein for administering the lethal drug. Carruthers received a one-year reprieve.
