Tennessee Halts Executions After Botched Lethal Injection

Tennessee's death penalty program has been put on hold statewide for the remainder of the year following a botched lethal injection attempt on inmate Christa Pike. The state's prison chief resigned in the wake of the incident, and Gov. Bill Lee has postponed all scheduled executions through 2026 as an independent review of the process begins.

Pike's execution, intended for her role in the 1995 torture and murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, was halted after lethal injection drugs failed to kill her. She is reported to be in critical condition at an undisclosed hospital. This marks the second failed execution in Tennessee this year; inmate Tony Carruthers' execution was also halted in May due to difficulties with the IV line.

The incident has directly impacted the scheduled Dec. 3 execution of convicted double murderer Gary Wayne Sutton, which has now been paused. Sutton was convicted in the 1992 murders of Tommy Griffin and Connie Branam, a brother and sister. According to court records, Sutton and an uncle, James Dellinger, were with Griffin at a bar before an altercation. Griffin was later found with injuries and arrested for public intoxication. Sutton and Dellinger returned to the police station to bail him out and witnesses reported hearing gunshots shortly after. Griffin was found dead from a shotgun blast to the head. The next day, Griffin's sister, Branam, disappeared after asking about her brother at the same bar. Her body was discovered in her burned car, with the cause of death unclear.

Sutton has maintained his innocence, and his supporters have characterized the case against him as circumstantial, with questions remaining about the exact circumstances of both murders.

Pike's failed execution is believed to be the first instance of a death row inmate surviving the administration of lethal injection drugs, according to the Death Penalty Information Center. This follows an incident in Oklahoma in 2014 where inmate Clayton Lockett survived the initial injection but died of a heart attack later. The state of Tennessee has not yet determined what will happen next for Pike, but Lee has stated that Carruthers will not face execution again for at least a year.
