A part-time conductor for the historic Incline Railways in Chattanooga, Tennessee, was fired on July 4th after making an Independence Day announcement that some passengers described as xenophobic and racist.
The conductor, identified as Jack Peterson, addressed passengers during a ride up Lookout Mountain. He initially wished "the very, very few Americans in here, Happy Independence Day." He then turned his attention to foreign visitors, stating, "To the rest of you, welcome to the greatest country on the face of the planet. And if you disagree, you can leave."
One passenger, Nathan Scherer of Florida, recorded the announcement and shared the video on social media, where it gained significant traction. Scherer stated that the remarks were demeaning and that he reported the incident to the Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA), which operates the railway.
CARTA Chief of Staff Scott Wilson issued a public apology for the conductor's comments, emphasizing that they did not represent the organization's values. "I want to apologize directly to the passengers who experienced this and to everyone who has seen the video and felt its sting," Wilson said. He added that the railway has a long history of welcoming international visitors and is committed to making all passengers feel respected.
Peterson, who was a part-time employee, defended his remarks after his termination, stating he is "very patriotic" and believes the United States is the "greatest country on earth." He claimed his intention was patriotic and not to express hostility. "If you don't believe in making this country better then why are you here?" he was quoted as saying.
