Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel expressed strong disapproval of the NCAA's decision to suspend linebacker Arion Carter for two games, calling the ruling "bulls–t" and "completely outdated." The suspension stems from Carter accepting a $427 prepaid flight to an NFL pre-draft training facility, a violation of NCAA rules.
Heupel defended Carter's actions, stating the player was upfront about the situation and has since paid back the cost of the flight. Carter initially declared for the NFL Draft late in the 2025 season after playing through a foot injury. However, he required surgery for the injury, leading him to withdraw from the draft and return to college football. "He made the right choice for him to come back to college football," Heupel told reporters at Tennessee's preseason media day. "He was upfront and honest."
Carter's violation is classified by the NCAA as a Level III offense, considered a basic breach of conduct. Despite the penalty, Heupel expressed disappointment for both the player and the team. Carter, a key player for the Volunteers, recorded 161 tackles in three seasons, including a career-high 76 in 2025. He also contributed 1.5 sacks last season.
Carter will miss the Volunteers' opening games against Furman and Georgia Tech. He will be eligible to return for the game against Kennesaw State on September 19.
