Teenagers Arrested After Large Brawl Erupts at Adelaide Tourist Spot
Police responded to reports of a large group of youths fighting at Glenelg beach, a popular Adelaide destination.
Two teenagers have been charged with disorderly behavior following a large-scale brawl involving an estimated 200 youths at Adelaide's Glenelg beach on Sunday afternoon. South Australia Police were called to the scene near Mosely Square shortly before 4 p.m. amid reports of the fight. The area, a popular tourist destination, was crowded with visitors, including families, at the time of the incident.
Additional officers, including mounted police, were deployed due to the scale of the altercation. Witnesses reported that the crowd had initially dispersed when police arrived but then became antagonistic and swarmed the officers. A rugby football was reportedly thrown at a female officer, who was unharmed.
The incident occurred during an increased police presence in the area, part of a recent crackdown on anti-social behavior. The brawl follows similar recent fights at Glenelg and other nearby beaches.
Witnesses described the youths engaging in a game called 'run it straight' on the foreshore before the brawl erupted. The controversial game involves one participant running at another who attempts to tackle them.
The area, including the Glenelg Jetty, was cordoned off by police on Sunday evening. Authorities stated that they would continue to take proactive action against individuals exhibiting disorderly conduct in public spaces. Further police deployments are planned for coastal areas between Largs Bay and Glenelg to address the ongoing issues.
