A 17-year-old driver, Beatrix, was forced to wait for eight hours on the M25 motorway during her first solo drive after passing her test. The gridlock was a result of a crash that occurred near Lakeside Shopping Centre in Grays, Essex, at approximately 5:30 AM on a Thursday. The road did not fully reopen until 8:40 PM the same day due to several complicating factors.

National Highways reported that approximately a quarter of a mile of the road required resurfacing due to an oil spill. The process of cooling the affected area was further slowed by the hot weather conditions.

For Beatrix, what was expected to be a 20-minute journey with her relative turned into a prolonged period of inactivity in traffic. Despite the challenging circumstances, she noted that her driving instructor would likely have been impressed with her handling of the situation. "I've never driven on the M25... so, that was very scary," she said. Both her and her cousin's mobile phones died during the wait, leaving them reliant on road signs to navigate.

Beatrix sat in the driver's seat of her car, looking at the passenger who is taking a photo of her with a slightly grumpy expression on her face. She has shoulder-length black hair and is wearing a black T-shirt with a purple pattern on the front.

Beatrix was among numerous drivers caught in miles-long queues on the motorway following the incident.
