Teenager Jailed for Killing Grandfather Who Tried to Break Up Fight

A teenage man has been jailed for less than five years for killing a grandfather who was attempting to break up a fight. Simon Beston, 55, died in hospital three weeks after being punched to the ground and suffering a fractured skull and severe brain swelling.

Ethan Cockram, now 21, was sentenced at Newcastle Crown Court for the manslaughter of Mr. Beston, who had been trying to de-escalate a confrontation involving drunk youths on July 25 last year. Mr. Beston and his partner had been giving money to a homeless couple when the group, who had spent the day at Newcastle Racecourse, began attacking a stranger.

When Mr. Beston intervened, a female member of the group began arguing with his partner, pulling her to the ground. As Mr. Beston went to protect her, he was pushed to the floor and repeatedly kicked by Lola Charlton and Shayne Cook, both now 20. He then got to his feet and made a gesture intended to calm the situation, but Cockram punched him to the side of the face. The blow rendered Mr. Beston unconscious, and he hit his head on the kerb.

Cockram was on police bail at the time of the offense, having committed another assault—punching two strangers, one of whom was seriously injured—just three months prior. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to four years and 10 months. Under current guidelines, he may serve as little as 40% of his sentence in custody, potentially meaning he could be released in less than two years.

Cook pleaded guilty to affray and received an 18-month sentence, while Charlton received a nine-month suspended sentence and 120 hours of unpaid work.

The court heard that the incident occurred around 10:15 p.m. as Mr. Beston and his partner encountered Cockram and his friends, who were described as being dressed in racing attire. After leaving the racecourse, the group had gone into the city center. As they approached Mr. Beston and his partner, Cockram forcefully pushed an unknown man into a parked car before Cook punched him. Mr. Beston's attempt to intervene led to his fatal injury.

In a victim impact statement, Mr. Beston's partner, Maxine, described experiencing survivor's guilt and the devastation of losing him. She stated, "He was the person I shared my home, my life and my future with. In one moment, everything we had planned and everything I knew was taken away from me."

Mr. Beston's mother, Mary, spoke of her heartbreak and the ongoing impact of his death, as his daughter, Chloe, described the grieving process as more difficult and traumatic due to the nature of his loss.

Detective Inspector Ashley Loader of Northumbria Police commented that the case demonstrates how quickly acts of violence can escalate and the profound impact they have, urging individuals to consider their actions and avoid momentary lapses in judgment that lead to lifelong regret.
