A 16-year-old boy died early Monday after sustaining a fatal gunshot wound to the head while playing with a gun inside a Bronx home, according to authorities and sources.
Police responded to a multi-family house on Prospect Avenue near East 169th Street in Morrisania around 5:10 a.m. where they discovered the victim, identified as John Nunez. Nunez, who lived blocks away from the location, was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical services.
Law enforcement sources indicated that Nunez and his friend were handling the firearm when it discharged. It remains unclear how the teenagers obtained the weapon.
The friend was taken into custody at the scene, but charges had not been immediately filed. Tearful family and friends gathered at the location following the incident.
