Teenager Dangling From Moving Bus Sparks Outrage and Police Investigation

A teenage passenger has drawn widespread condemnation and prompted a police investigation after footage emerged of him dangling from the side window of a moving bus on a busy Sydney road.

The incident occurred Sunday night on the Route 199 bus, which services Sydney's Northern Beaches, on Barrenjoey Road in Mona Vale. Video captured by a passing vehicle shows the boy holding his phone aloft while hanging outside the open window of the bus.

Transport for NSW coordinator-general Howard Collins described the behavior as extremely dangerous. "Within a second he could've hit something, like a tree or a lamppost, or fallen out of the vehicle and the motorists behind would've had no chance but to run them over," Collins told Nine News.

Collins noted that it is not uncommon for unruly teenagers to force open bus windows. "They either take out the emergency window or literally kick the glass out, and then they do these acts," he said.

Authorities described the teen's behaviour as extremely dangerous.

This incident follows a pattern of similar acts by teenagers, including hanging from the back of buses or opening emergency roof hatches. Such actions risk causing transport delays.

Passengers found to be damaging public vehicles face significant penalties. An on-the-spot fine of $400 can be issued, or a court penalty of up to $2,200. For serious property damage, fines can reach $5,500, with a potential prison sentence of up to five years.

Collins warned about the severe consequences of such stunts, stating that a single misstep around heavy vehicles like buses could lead to lifelong injuries. "I've attended incidents where the kid is lying on the floor with a severe injury, crying out for their mother. We don't want that," he said.

Transport NSW Coordinator-General Howard Collins condemned the dangerous stunt.

The incident has sparked criticism online, with social media users expressing disbelief at the teenager's actions. The NSW Police are continuing their investigation into the event.
