Teenager Charged After Crashing BMW into Rugby Fans
An 18-year-old driver faces multiple charges after his vehicle struck ten people celebrating the Newcastle Knights' NRL Grand Final appearance, leaving a five-year-old girl in critical condition.
An 18-year-old man has been charged by NSW Police after allegedly driving his gold BMW into a crowd of Newcastle Knights fans, injuring ten people. The incident occurred on Saturday morning as fans gathered to farewell the team ahead of the NRL Grand Final.
The teenager faces nine offenses, including three counts of dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, three counts of negligent driving, and three counts of causing bodily harm by misconduct in charge of a motor vehicle. He was released from hospital and taken to a police station, where he was charged. His license has been suspended, and he was to be held in custody overnight pending a court appearance on Sunday.
Emergency services were called to the Newcastle Link Road roundabout at approximately 9:30 a.m. following reports of a vehicle hitting pedestrians. Among the injured is a five-year-old girl who remains in a critical but stable condition in an induced coma and has undergone multiple operations. Her mother was also seriously injured and faces a long recovery period, impacting her ability to work and placing financial strain on the family. A GoFundMe has been established to support the child and her mother.
A 67-year-old man, initially in critical condition, has had his status downgraded to serious but stable. Four other individuals, including two young girls (aged two and five), a 31-year-old woman, and a 48-year-old man, remain in hospital in stable conditions. Three men between the ages of 24 and 27, along with a 63-year-old woman, have been discharged from the hospital.
Two teenage passengers in the driver's vehicle were unharmed. One of the injured fans, Chris Clancy, shared on social media that he suffered a broken collarbone and possibly a sprained or broken foot. He was awaiting surgery.
Newcastle Lord Mayor Gavin Morris stated the driver was a Knights supporter who was present for the celebration. He noted the driver had allegedly lost control of the vehicle.
The incident caused the diversion of the Newcastle Knights Grand Final procession. Video footage circulating online showed the driver being arrested amid an angry crowd. NSW Police Assistant Commissioner David Waddell reported that two passengers from the BMW had to be removed from the scene due to the crowd's reaction. The driver underwent mandatory drug and alcohol testing. Waddell also mentioned that while there was significant crowd anger, some bystanders provided first aid to the injured.
The Newcastle Knights issued a statement expressing their thoughts for those impacted and deferring further comment to the NSW Police investigation. Several Knights players, including captain Kalyn Ponga and Dane Gagai, shared messages of support for the Newcastle community.
NSW Police Minister Yasmin Catley called the event a "preventable tragedy" and highlighted warnings issued about driver behavior during the celebrations. Premier Chris Minns expressed his condolences and thanked emergency services. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated he had discussed the incident with Premier Minns and conveyed his concern for everyone involved.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
