An 18-year-old accused of assisting a man who posed as a San Francisco 49ers player to defraud women has been prohibited from using dating applications as a condition of his release from custody. Taylor Chan was arrested on August 24 for his alleged role in a conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
Chan was released on August 27 under a series of conditions, including a ban on using online dating sites, social media applications, and dating applications. He is also forbidden from violating laws, must surrender his passport, must avoid contact with alleged victims, and cannot consume alcohol or drugs. Furthermore, Chan is restricted from possessing or using devices with internet access without prior permission from pretrial services, and he may only possess one cellphone.
Federal prosecutors allege that Chan and Daejon Love, 35, met women on dating apps such as Hinge, Bumble, and Tinder before perpetrating the scam. Love allegedly impersonated a wealthy 49ers player and solicited money from women for supposed investments. Chan, according to authorities, posed as Love's financial advisor to lend credibility to the scheme.
The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Oregon stated that the fraudulent operation occurred from February 2022 until the arrests were made last week at Boise Airport in Idaho. Both Love and Chan face charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and wire fraud, with each count carrying a potential penalty of up to 20 years in prison.
While Chan has been released pending trial, Love was ordered to remain in custody, with federal prosecutors citing him as a serious flight risk.
