A 16-year-old girl, identified as Elvie, recounted the intense fear and subsequent devastation experienced when a wildfire forced her family to evacuate their home. Police advised her family on a Sunday morning to pack belongings in anticipation of the approaching blaze.

Elvie, a GCSE student, expressed disappointment in not being better prepared, initially believing the fire was too distant to pose a threat. "And then knowing that there's like so many things I want to bring with me, and I just can't go back," she said, describing the difficult choices and the feeling of uncertainty. "Then there's that fear, not knowing if I'm coming back. Is my house still going to be there? How long am I going to be away for?"

The family waited for hours before learning that their property had been spared. They were able to return home two days later. However, their dog, Marley, had to stay elsewhere as he was not permitted at their hotel. Upon their return, Elvie described the "devastation" her family witnessed.

This event occurred as heatwaves and wildfires have impacted various regions, prompting evacuations and raising concerns about preparedness for extreme weather events. The emotional impact on individuals, particularly young people, facing displacement and potential loss due to natural disasters is significant.
