A night out ended in tragedy for 19-year-old Archie Beston when he was fatally stabbed in the heart in Kingston-upon-Thames. The attack occurred in the early hours of February 29, 2020, as Beston left The Viper Rooms nightclub.
Archie, a teetotal sales assistant who had aspirations of working in Ibiza and appearing on reality television, was described by his mother, Becky Beston, as "sunshine in human form." He was a talented youth footballer who had played for academies including Brentford and Millwall. His mother recounted that Archie had previously reassured her about carrying designer clothes, stating, "My life's is worth more than clothes. They can take it."
Tragically, Archie and another teenager were targeted when a van, driven by Finlay Ahwan, 21, deliberately drove towards them. Tyrone Bryan, 20, then emerged from the van and stabbed Archie. Door staff at the venue initially reported the incident as a potential terrorist attack.
Archie's killer, Bryan, was known to authorities and nicknamed 'Red Alert' due to his violent history and ability to evade justice. He had previous convictions for carrying knives and was previously accused of murder in 2018, though the charge was later discontinued. Ahwan also had a history of violence, having previously avoided prison for stabbing a man.
At Kingston Crown Court, Bryan was sentenced to 19 years in prison for manslaughter and grievous bodily harm. Ahwan received seven years for attempted grievous bodily harm and dangerous driving.
Mrs. Beston, who raised Archie as a single mother, has since become an advocate against knife crime. She is touring primary schools to educate children on the dangers of carrying weapons. "It's a fact that if you carry a knife, you're more like to use it or have the weapon used against you," she stated, comparing a carried knife to a water bottle that may be used even if one is not thirsty.
Archie Beston was one of 69 homicide victims aged 13 to 19 in England and Wales in the year to March 2020, with 45 teenagers killed by blades. London alone accounts for approximately a third of all knife offenses in the UK.
Following his death, Archie's organs were donated, saving the lives of two individuals. His mother continues to speak out, hoping to spare other families the pain of losing a child to knife violence. Despite the immense grief, she finds some comfort in her belief of a future reunion with her son. Archie was buried with a football at his feet, a nod to his sporting dreams.
