A promising 17-year-old football player, Levi Brown, was fatally shot during a game at Independence High School in Bakersfield, California, on Friday evening. Police have arrested a 15-year-old suspect in connection with the incident.

Brown, a former quarterback at Garces Memorial High School, was identified by friends and family as the victim. His former coach, Vince Carter, described Brown as an “exceptional athlete” with “all the talent in the world,” who he believed would have played college football.

The shooting occurred just minutes into the season-opening game between Independence High School and Centennial High School. Police responded to the scene shortly after 8 p.m. and found Brown with gunshot wounds. He was transported to Kern Medical Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Bakersfield Police Sergeant Eric Celedon stated that the violence erupted just outside the stadium's inner fence and stemmed from an altercation. "Based on our preliminary investigation, we believe this began as an isolated incident that began as an altercation between a group of individuals, which ultimately resulted in the shooting," Celedon said. Police confirmed that Brown and the suspect knew each other, indicating that the shooting was not a random act of violence.

Carter mentioned that Brown had given up football and gotten into trouble. He also noted that Brown was the father of a one-year-old daughter. The coach suggested Brown was with “the wrong crowd” at the game and encountered the suspected shooter, leading to a fight.
