A 17-year-old e-bike rider died Thursday morning after colliding with an SUV near City Hall in Lower Manhattan, authorities reported.
The incident occurred just before 9 a.m. on Centre Street at the intersection with Chambers Street, an area close to the courthouses and NYPD headquarters.
According to police and law enforcement sources, the teen was traveling northbound and veered out of the bike lane into the path of a 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe. The e-bike then struck the SUV, which was traveling in the same direction.
Emergency medical services responded and pronounced the rider dead at the scene. The teenager, who was carrying a school ID, had no drugs or alcohol in his system, sources said. He has not been publicly identified pending family notification.
The driver of the SUV, a 40-year-old woman, remained at the scene and was not facing any charges. The NYPD's Collision Investigation Squad is investigating the crash.
