Teen Driver Denied Bail After Allegedly Crashing into Fans

An 18-year-old driver, Indika Bambrick Samarasinghe, has been denied bail after allegedly driving his gold BMW into a crowd of Newcastle Knights fans. The incident occurred Saturday morning as fans gathered to see off the team ahead of the NRL Grand Final.

Samarasinghe, identified as a P-plate driver from Wallsend, near Newcastle, faces nine charges, including three counts of dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, three counts of negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, and three counts of causing bodily harm by misconduct in charge of a motor vehicle. Police allege the car struck fans gathered on the pavement near the Newcastle Link Road roundabout on Transfield Avenue.

Among the ten injured, a five-year-old girl remains in critical but stable condition in an induced coma, having sustained serious injuries requiring multiple operations. Her mother was also seriously injured and faces a long recovery period, impacting her ability to work. A 67-year-old man, initially in critical condition, is now listed as serious but stable.

During a brief court hearing, Samarasinghe did not apply for bail, which was formally refused. His legal team requested a health assessment for him while in custody, including a review of his mental health. Court records indicate Samarasinghe's license had been previously suspended in February, and an appeal against that suspension was unsuccessful in April.

A GoFundMe page has been established to support the injured child and her mother, aiming to alleviate financial pressures during their recovery. The funds are intended for medical bills, daily living expenses, travel, and other unforeseen costs.

Samarasinghe will next appear in Newcastle Local Court on October 15.
