A 15-year-old girl and her 16-year-old boyfriend are in custody in connection with a shooting spree that left five family members dead and two others injured across East St. Louis, Illinois, on Sunday. The victims have been identified as Devin May, 24; Quentin Thompson, 21; Shania Thompson, 25; Cherie May, 49; and Patricia May, 74.
Authorities described the incident as a "targeted mass shooting" that occurred at multiple locations within the city. The suspects, whose names have not been publicly released as they have not been formally charged, allegedly carried out the attacks. According to the girl's father, Marcus May, he had received prior warnings about his daughter's behavior and potential threats.
Marcus May told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that his daughter had been experiencing trouble at school, leading him and her mother to switch her to homeschooling. He claimed this decision angered the teenager, who had previously run away from home and stolen her mother's credit card. May also stated that his ex-partner had warned him about his daughter being in a concerning group chat with her boyfriend and other teens where they discussed harming family members, a threat he did not take seriously at the time.
Days before the shooting, May said his daughter stole a gun from her mother. On the morning of the attacks, he received multiple missed calls and messages, indicating that a tragedy had occurred. He also mentioned contacting the boyfriend's parents to urge them to intervene with their son.
The surviving family members have set up a GoFundMe campaign to assist with expenses, describing the deceased as "wonderful people with good hearts" and expressing their devastation over the loss.
Devin May, who was allegedly killed by his cousin, had recently welcomed a daughter. His wife, Chelsey Gatlin, called him a "great father." Miranda May, Devin's sister and daughter of Cherie May, also paid tribute to the victims, emphasizing their loving nature.
The Illinois State Police are continuing their investigation into the events. Images of some of the victims, including Devin May, Quentin Thompson, Shania Thompson, and Cherie May, have been released by media outlets.
