Teen Charged with Murder After Friend Shot at 21st Birthday Party
Prosecutors allege an argument over firing a new AR-15 escalated to fatal shooting in Alabama.
A 19-year-old is facing murder charges after allegedly shooting and killing his longtime friend during a 21st birthday party in Grand Bay, Alabama. Tucker Braxton Woods was arrested following the October 17 incident, where prosecutors say he used a newly acquired AR-15 rifle.
The dispute reportedly began when Woods wanted to fire his rifle on the property and argued with the victim's girlfriend, Savannah Taylor. According to testimony from Mobile County Sheriff's Office investigator Michael Pozobyt, the victim, Gabriel Rogers, intervened and told Woods not to disrespect Taylor. Rogers then allegedly removed his shirt and produced a pocket knife. Pozobyt stated that Woods then fired the rifle multiple times at Rogers, who was found with multiple gunshot wounds and pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators recovered eight spent .223-caliber rifle casings at the trailer home where the party was held. Woods's brother reportedly led deputies to a drainage culvert where the firearm was discovered. Pozobyt also testified that attendees had consumed alcohol before the shooting.
Mobile County District Judge Deborah McGowin found probable cause to send the case to a grand jury. Woods has pleaded not guilty. Mobile County District Attorney Keith Blackwood described the incident as "absolutely heartbreaking," noting that the two men were reportedly friends. Blackwood emphasized that while the defense may point to intoxication and the quick escalation, Alabama law does not consider intoxication a defense unless it reaches the level of insanity.
Woods's defense attorney, Jason Darley, indicated that the case might center on intent and the circumstances of self-defense, noting that many party attendees were heavily intoxicated. Darley plans to seek youthful offender status for Woods. However, Blackwood stated that arguments or youth do not excuse taking a life.
Woods was reportedly out on bond for a driving under the influence charge at the time of the fatal shooting and is being held without bond at the Mobile Metro Jail.
Rogers, who graduated from Theodore High School, worked for Premier Vinyl Siding. His obituary described his "loving nature" and "quiet kindness." He was expecting a child with Taylor and was also helping to support her daughter from a previous relationship. A GoFundMe fundraiser organized by Taylor mentioned his anticipation of becoming a father.
