Teen Attacked Man in Drug-Fueled Rage, Court Hears

A 19-year-old man has been sentenced to four years and one month in prison for a brutal and unprovoked assault that left two men injured. Jayden Swift pleaded guilty to two counts of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent.

The incident, which occurred in January 2026 in Barnsley town center, South Yorkshire, was captured on CCTV. The footage shows Swift attacking a first victim, punching and stamping on him until he was unconscious. Recorder Jeremy Hill-Baker described the attack as 'unprovoked, senseless and serious'. The prosecutor stated that the first complainant suffered injuries to his head, including a blackened eye.

Swift then turned his attention to a second man who had intervened. After a brief exchange, Swift punched the man, knocking him to the ground. The CCTV footage shows Swift then kicking the unconscious man in the head multiple times before celebrating his actions with his arms in the air. He delivered a final kick to the man's head before being arrested by police who had been called by onlookers.

Sheffield Crown Court heard that both victims were intoxicated at the time and have limited recollection of the events. The second complainant sustained bruising to his eye and scalp, and grazing to his head. Swift, who admitted to being intoxicated on a combination of cocaine and alcohol, also could not recall the details of the assault.

Recorder Hill-Baker commented on the severity of the first attack, stating that it was 'astonishing' the victim did not suffer life-changing injuries or lose his life. In sentencing Swift, the judge noted the defendant's jubilant reaction after incapacitating the second victim. Swift was also issued a ten-year restraining order protecting both men and ordered to pay a £228 victim surcharge.
