A promising young athlete was killed and a teenager arrested after gunfire erupted at a California high school football game on Friday night. Levi Brown, 17, was fatally shot during the season opener at Independence High School in Bakersfield, authorities reported.
The shooting occurred around 8 p.m. amid chaos as spectators fled for safety, according to witness accounts and video footage from the event. The Bakersfield Police Department arrested a 15-year-old boy on Saturday in connection with the incident. The suspect's identity has not been released by police.
Brown was identified as the victim by his relatives and his sophomore year football coach, Vince Carter. Carter described Brown as a talented player with significant potential, noting that he was also a father to a one-year-old daughter. Carter told the California Post that Brown might have been headed for college football stardom but suggested he was associating with a negative peer group.
Incident investigators believe the shooting stemmed from an altercation between a group of individuals on the south side of the football field. "We know that families look forward to coming out here every Friday night and seeing their kids play on this field," Sergeant Eric Celedon of the Bakersfield Police Department said. "Based on our preliminary investigation, we believe this began as an isolated incident that began as an altercation between a group of individuals, which ultimately resulted in the shooting."
Brown was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The incident caused widespread panic, with attendees seen running from the stands and towards their cars while law enforcement swarmed the area. Some football players were observed crouching for cover.
In a separate incident on the same night, a 19-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man were injured in a shooting at a high school football game in Jacksonville, Florida. Police in that case indicated the suspects were believed to be attending the game and had no affiliation with the schools, suggesting the shooting was the result of an ongoing dispute between the parties involved. The suspects in the Jacksonville shooting are thought to be in their early 20s.
