Ted Cruz: No Clear GOP Successor to Trump on the Horizon for 2028

Senator Ted Cruz stated that the Republican Party currently lacks a clear successor to former President Donald Trump and anticipates a substantial debate over the party's future direction leading up to the 2028 presidential election. Cruz, who has previously expressed presidential ambitions, suggested on the podcast "Pod Force One" that the party will undergo a competitive and thorough primary process to determine its nominee.

"I think we are going to have a full and vigorous primary and discussion," Cruz told host Miranda Devine. "I think the voters are going to decide who are we and what do we believe, and that matters. And President Trump is a unique historical figure. I’m going to say right now, there is no Donald Trump on the horizon to succeed [him]."

Cruz indicated he would not speculate on potential matchups, such as a contest involving Vice President J.D. Vance or Secretary of State Marco Rubio, until after the midterm elections. He emphasized the importance of the current midterm elections, calling them "the most consequential midterm I’ve ever seen in my life."

Turning to the Democratic Party, Cruz expressed concern about the potential nomination of a "far-left radical." He warned of a "very real danger" of such a candidate winning the presidency in 2029, while dismissing the viability of centrist Democrats like Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear for the party's nomination.

Regarding the Republican Party's internal discussions, Cruz posited that the debate centers on fundamental questions about economic and foreign policy. "Economically, are we a small government, free market conservative party? Or are we a big government nanny state party?" he questioned. "And related to that, on foreign policy, are we an isolationist party? Do we want to just withdraw from the world? Or do we believe in American leadership in the world?"

Cruz added that while no one may be able to perfectly replace Trump, the party must focus on continuing to win elections and identify leaders who can achieve that. The podcast episode is part of a weekly series featuring conversations with influential figures in Washington.
