Senator Ted Cruz, a Republican from Texas, recently called for a political landscape free of "crazy people," a statement that quickly drew criticism online.

During an appearance on Fox News, Cruz predicted that Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) will run for president and that New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D) will eventually succeed Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) in the Senate. Cruz then focused on Mamdani, a democratic socialist, stating he believed Mamdani to be the "single most powerful Democrat in the country."

Cruz expressed concern over the direction of both parties, stating, "I want to see two normal parties that are not filled with crazy people, who can actually do something reasonable, and who actually love the country." He added that he was not celebrating the perceived rise of more extreme political figures, as some Republicans were, because he believed it to be "bad for the country" and "unhealthy."

His remarks, however, prompted mockery from critics who pointed to his affiliation with former President Donald Trump and his own political record. Online commentators suggested that Cruz's plea for normalcy was ironic given his political alignment, with many viewing his statement as a misstep that backfired.
