Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) has described the nickname "Lyin’ Ted," famously used by Donald Trump during their 2016 presidential primary battle, as an act of "political genius." Cruz, speaking on Sean Hannity's podcast, stated that the taunt was effective because it directly challenged what he considered his greatest political asset: trustworthiness.

During the 2016 campaign, Trump frequently employed the "Lyin’ Ted" moniker to undermine Cruz, alongside personal attacks on Cruz's wife. Despite the contentious nature of the attacks at the time, Cruz suggested that he respected the strategic element of Trump's approach. He characterized Trump as possessing an "instinctual marketing genius" capable of turning an opponent's strength into a vulnerability.

"It was jiu-jitsu, it's using your opponent's strength against him. It was brilliant," Cruz said, reflecting on how the nickname played into the narrative of his campaign. He acknowledged that Trump's use of the nickname was so potent that he was unsure if it stemmed from deep strategic thought or pure instinct.

Cruz, who has since become a prominent supporter of Trump, also praised the former president's perceived boldness, referring to him as having "cast-iron balls."
