Ted Cruz Booed By Thousands at Formula 1 Event in Texas
This marks the second time in recent months the Texas Senator has faced a hostile crowd at a sporting event in his home state.
Texas Senator Ted Cruz was met with loud boos from thousands of fans as he presented the trophy at the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas. The incident marks the second time in as many months that Cruz has been jeered during a public appearance at a sporting event in his home state.
As Cruz appeared on the podium to award the first-place trophy to Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli, the crowd at the Circuit of the Americas reacted with sustained jeering. The boos continued until Cruz had finished presenting the trophy, after which the crowd cheered for Antonelli.
Sky Sports commentator David Croft noted the reception during the F1 broadcast, suggesting, "Midterms are coming up, people are already voting with their voice." While Cruz is not up for re-election until 2030, the state is currently experiencing a closely contested Senate race between Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton and Democratic State Representative James Talarico.
Social media users also reacted to the event, with one reporter calling the moment "embarrassing" and a user replying, "As he should be. Good for the crowd."
Last month, Cruz received a similar reception from University of Texas students during an appearance on ESPN's College GameDay. During that segment, Cruz spoke about proposed legislation concerning college sports financing and eligibility, but his remarks were largely drowned out by boos from the student audience.
