Senator Ted Cruz, R-Texas, was met with sustained boos from fans at a Texas college football game on Saturday. The reception occurred during his appearance on ESPN's "College GameDay," where he was interviewed for nearly 10 minutes by host Rece Davis.
During the segment, Cruz attempted to promote the Protect College Sports Act, a bipartisan bill he co-authored. The legislation seeks to establish limits on athlete transfers and implement a hard cap on payments to athletes. As Cruz discussed the bill, the crowd began chanting, "Ted, you suck!"
Cruz later responded to the incident on X, formerly Twitter. "Whole crowd came on a blitz this morning, I stayed in the pocket. Never flinched," he wrote, using football terminology to describe his experience.
Despite the on-air reception, Cruz attended the game, where the Texas Longhorns achieved a 20-point comeback victory against the Ohio State Buckeyes. Cruz posted a photo from the game with actor Matthew McConaughey, quipping, "What curse?" referencing speculation that his presence on teams he supports brings bad luck.
