Tech Stocks Climb Ahead of Fed Decision on Interest Rates

Technology stocks continued their upward trend this week as markets await the U.S. Federal Reserve's decision on interest rates, with expectations leaning toward no immediate change. The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) is scheduled to conclude its meeting on Wednesday.

The tech sector, which benefits from accessible credit, saw futures for the Nasdaq Composite rise 0.4% before the market opened. S&P 500 futures increased by 0.1%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average futures saw a slight dip of 0.3%.

Several major tech companies are set to release their quarterly earnings reports this week. Alphabet and Microsoft are scheduled to report after the market closes on Wednesday, with Amazon and Intel releasing their results on Thursday.

Memory chipmaker SK Hynix reported a significant increase in its operating profit for the last quarter, reaching 83.3 trillion won ($62.8 billion), a nearly sevenfold rise from the previous year and surpassing market estimates. This news contributed to an 11.4% jump in its stock price.

In contrast, the cryptocurrency platform Robinhood experienced a sharp decline after its quarterly profit failed to meet expectations. Automaker Stellantis saw its stock rise 6% after reaffirming its annual guidance despite costs associated with its turnaround efforts.

The Federal Reserve faces a complex economic landscape, with rising energy prices adding pressure to inflation. Global crude oil prices saw an increase early Wednesday, with benchmark U.S. crude rising more than 2% following an attack on a major Saudi Arabian refinery attributed to Iran-backed Houthi rebels.

In Europe, stock markets showed mixed performance. Germany's DAX edged up less than 0.1%, while France's CAC 40 and Britain's FTSE 100 both experienced slight declines.

Asian markets saw a significant surge, with South Korea's Kospi closing up 6.6%.

The Bank of Japan is also commencing a two-day policy meeting, with analysts anticipating no change to its benchmark interest rate.

Treasury yields remained relatively stable ahead of the Fed's announcement. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note saw a modest increase to 5.0%. Last month, the Fed raised its benchmark federal funds rate for the first time in three years in an effort to curb inflation, but the prevailing sentiment on Wall Street is that rates will be held steady at this upcoming meeting.

The U.S. dollar saw a slight decrease against the Japanese yen and a marginal increase against the euro.
