A Texas public school teacher's emotional plea regarding his students' inability to read and interpret basic texts has gone viral, drawing attention to what many describe as a systemic failure in American education. Darius Williams, an English teacher, expressed his distress after finding that many of his 17- and 18-year-old students struggled to comprehend even short passages of text or answer straightforward questions about them.

Williams' heartfelt Instagram video has highlighted significant concerns about literacy and numeracy levels across the country. Data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) appears to support these concerns. In Houston, where Williams teaches, approximately 44% of 8th graders read at a "below basic" level, with only 20% reaching the "proficient" standard. Math proficiency in the same grade level is also low, with 51% of students scoring below basic.

Similar trends are evident in other major cities. In Baltimore, fewer than half of 8th graders achieve even a "basic" reading level, and less than a third meet that standard in math. Chicago reports that 37% of 8th graders fall below basic in reading and over half in math, while Philadelphia sees 50% below basic in reading and 62% in math.

These statistics suggest a pattern of "concentrated indifference" within educational systems that have reportedly continued to advance students despite known deficiencies in fundamental skills. The notes indicate that Black and Latino students disproportionately represent these low scores, a fact that Williams specifically lamented.

The issue is not confined to urban centers, with evidence of declining academic standards now appearing at the college level. A report from UC-San Diego indicated a nearly thirtyfold increase between 2020 and 2025 in the number of students whose math skills were below high school level. Similarly, professors at elite institutions like UC Berkeley have observed that students struggle to read more than a few pages per day for coursework. At prestigious private universities, including Columbia, Georgetown, and Princeton, educators report that students are not only unable to engage in complex textual analysis but often fail to complete assigned readings in their entirety.

The long-term implications of these educational shortcomings are a cause for significant concern, potentially impacting the nation's future intellectual and economic standing.
